Blogging in QuickPlace??? Hmmmm.....
Category NoneToday, for the third time in as many months, I received an email request wanting to know if we've ever built blogging capabilities, templates, etc for QuickPlace. Since there appears to be some demand, I started thinking about the reasons for the requests. As in, what is it about QuickPlace that lends itself to the idea? Here's what I have so far:
1. Self-service security and management (less IT involvement)
2. "Corporate", secure blogs - think executives blogging for the executive team
3. Simple web-based content creation
4. Ability to create content in Microsoft Office
5. Natural group blogging capabilities through membership management
6. Draft creation
7. Offline use
8. Of course, the ever-popular "we already own it, so it'd be free and easy". Except nobody's built the right capabilities into it.
On this last point, since blogging is relatively new compared to QuickPlace's 10-year history, there are a lot of customizations that it would require to satisfy the typical blogger's expectations. A blog calendar, commenting (threaded or not, the presentation would need a big adjustment), RSS feeds on entries and comments, blogrolls, categorization, integration with Technorati and other blogregators. Side blocks, pure HTML blocks, Googles, referers, the list goes on.
I'd be interested in comments about all of the above...why QuickPlace would be good for blogging, and what else it needs...

Comments
You list a lot of good qualities it brings to the table, but none of those, IMHO, overcomes the performance issues.

I wouildn't expect QP to be a solution for the everyday solo blogger, either. The customers asking about it are after a corporate blog, integrated with their existing Lotus environments.

Yes would be interested if there was a theme that fitted the usual blogging features...simple...and performing well...
User friendly!

Even though blogging may be new relative to QP, it's far from new - I would call it mainstream.
