Category NoneThat's right, for the second time in 6 years, I'm paying to attend a seminar/conference/event. The other 50 or so I've been to, I was speaking - and generally, they waive the fees <g>. In 2004, I went to IBM's PartnerWorld event. This week, I'm attending a "Best Practices in Consulting" seminar delivered by my most admired business writer, speaker and consultant, Alan Weiss. Dr Weiss's advice has helped me transform my business over the past three years, so it seemed more than worth the investment to spend some face time with him and other business and management consultants in advanced practice. This seminar isn't about technology, programming or even sales. I just wanted to build on my business education (BSB, MSM, MPA, Ph.D. ABD) and offer more management consulting to my clients than I do today. This is a good step in that direction.
Dr Weiss is probably best known for his bestseller "Million Dollar Consulting", first published in 1992 and revised, now in its third edition. He has written 25 books, 500+ articles, and consulted with some pretty large companies (it feels good to note that we share some clients...at a bit different level). Two great nuggets from his bio:
"His career has taken him to 54 countries and 49 states. (He is afraid to go to North Dakota.) "
and
"He once appeared on the popular TV game show Jeopardy, where he lost badly in the first round to a dancing waiter from Iowa."
As part of one of my more popular Lotusphere sessions on complex sales - for business partners and IBMers only - I reference a couple of Dr Weiss's books and will continue to do so when I update it next year. His advice is practical and has been effective for me and several others I know.
