My Afternoon with Websphere...

QuickImage Category None

And we wonder why customers get confused...

So I'm installing the Activities server.  It's a WAS server plus stuff.  Requires a WAS 6.1.0.3.  Which means, download a WAS 6.1.0 then update it to 6.1.0.3.  Easy?  Just read:

Installation Instructions (Fix Pack)
Install Fix Pack 3 (6.1.0.3) on top of IBM WebSphere Application server Version 6.1.0.

The Update Installer is not packaged as part of the fix pack download and needs to be acquired seperately. To get the Update Installer needed to install this fix pack, follow the instructions provided in
Update Installer for WebSphere Application Server V6.1 releases (a link).

OK...so you don't just install a fixpack, you have to use an installer to install it....so I go there...then...

Installation Instructions (Fix Pack Installer)
The Update Installer for WebSphere Software has a new installation program for Version 6.1, Installation Wizard for the Update Installer. Download and extract the contents onto file system and use the install wizard to install the Update Installer. Refer to the instructions found in the WebSphere Application Server Information Center topic on Installing the Update Installer for WebSphere Software (a link)

INSTRUCTIONS TO INSTALL THE 6.1.0.1 UPDATE INSTALLER TO INSTALL THE 6.1.0.3 UPDATE TO 6.1.0.  This stuff is not for humans.  I need say no more.

Comments

Gravatar Image1 - It's for IBM consultants, remember they are paid by the hour so it needs to be hard

Gravatar Image2 - LOL...just LOL!

Gravatar Image3 - Don't forget - it's not just one fixpack, no, not even two, but four:

Core WAS
SDK
IHS (assuming you're using IHS)
IHS Plugins

If they're all on the same machine, it's not too hard. Also, this is actually better. Before when you had this stuff all on one machine, you actually had to install the installer in three different places - one for WAS/SDK, one for IHS, and one for the plugins. Now you just put it in c:\ibm\websphere, and it manages to find everything else.

Gravatar Image4 - @Carl - Ah yes, hours for dollars. I'd almost forgotten about that. My last hour billed was in 1999. It's such a bad model for consulting.

Gravatar Image5 - @4 but works well for IBM

Gravatar Image6 - Hey guys ... You're lucky to start with version 6.1, with previous releases doing an update was a lot more complex. So stop complaining (eh eh :)... Domino has the most wonderful and smart approach to upgrades. Websphere is improving but the Java world has to be complex (so it seems).

Btw once you begin to get it is not so bad... If you're not happy upgrading websphere keep your eyes off Websphere Portal (I love it but upgrading is a pain).

Just a question... how is activity server ? Cant wait to get it !!!

Gravatar Image7 - LOL, well that's made my day. It obviously isn't just me that finds this stuff so difficult and so frustrating.

I'm just waiting to see the install/upgrade info for the full Connections package - it is going to be all that you detail above, plus much much more...

Gravatar Image8 - Good to see that it's not just me that finds upgrading WAS and WPS a pain.
I love Domino upgrades - next, next, next. The people who built that installer aught to pay the WebSphere folks a visit.
