WebSphere Portal Installation - yes, it can be done...
Category None
Attempt #4 to install ended up being successful. Lessons learned? A few. One, if you uninstall WP make sure it's ALL GONE. Two, if you get any error messages at all, you're probably hosed so might as well plan for more time with a good book. Three, turn off the antivirus software (I know, this is something that every technical professional knows, but it was running so stealthily that I didn't notice. Besides, it's in the same category as "don't muck with video drivers" - we all do it anyway).
So on day 5, about 8 PM, WP completed a successful installation. It's become one of those things that I could do the first time, next time. It took about 2.5 hours on a 2.4 GHz P4 with local disk images. Given that, I've compiled a list of reading material suggested for anyone who will be installing WP soon:
I thought about it, and instead went with a DVD, Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Good flick, even on a 15" screen. Tomorrow I'll take a break from WP, as I owe presentations and a final article edit to Advisor, and I hate to disappoint people (doesn't stop me, but I hate it nonetheless).
There's a certain sense of satisfaction in working through a tough product installation...makes one feel like a lot has been accomplished. After all, just getting it installed is not quite in the "Pay homage to the Portal God!" category, but if anybody wanted to, I wouldn't complain...<g>

- Kafka's The Castle
- War and Peace
- The IBM Web Site (unabridged)
- Anything by Tom Clancy (plan for 2-3)
- Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales (untranslated)
