Canterbury, Dover, Deal and Sandwich

QuickImage Category None

Spent a few days on the outskirts of Canterbury, located in the southeast of England about 16 miles from the English Channel.  One of the most interesting sights was in Dover, where during World War II there were a series of secret underground tunnels that held military strategists, a hospital, and hundreds of workers - to keep them safe from shelling.

After visiting the tunnels, a tour of Dover Castle yielded more tunnels - these from the middle ages - and a series of history lessons.  Apparently folks were not quite so tall 800 years ago (the Keep was erected in 1181), as most of the doorways are about 5'6" tall and now bear signs warning visitors to "Mind Your Head".  More of the same at the smaller Deal Castle, and a quick bite in Sandwich (sorry).

On to London tomorrow to the Penumbra meeting, our first in Europe since fall 1999.
