Collaboration University 2010 Super-Early reg ends Sunday...ish

QuickImage Category Collaboration University
Just a quick reminder to anyone who doesn't receive newsletters or the mailings that Collaboration University 2010, the only conference dedicated to Lotus Quickr and Sametime, will bump its registration fees over the weekend. This is the fifth year and eleventh and twelfth installations of Collaboration University, and we (SNAPPS, Turtle Partnership, Connectria, Epilio, and BE Systems/Bluewave) are thrilled at the prospect of educating and demonstrating techniques, best practices, and features in Sametime and Quickr 8.5.

A little content information has been posted here, and we're working hard on the full agenda (which is no small feat with one of the products still in super secret beta!). But you can expect:

--All new technical content, with all new product releases

--New cross-product sessions for integrated environments (where are those log files again?!)
--The introduction of management, strategy, innovation and collaboration culture topics - critical success factors for any installation

So sometime late Sunday night or early Monday morning, we'll bump the fee up $100 to the July rate. Or, it might wait until I've landed in New Hampshire Monday afternoon, as I have to be awake at 4:30 for my flight...hence the "ish" in the title!

Hope to see you there in London or Chicago!

Spilling the beans on next week's webinar, now that it's over half full

QuickImage Category Collaboration University
Troy and I are delivering a Collaboration University Webinar next Thursday, March 11th, and now that the samples are developed I'll spill the beans.

The Webinar (free to CU 2009 attendees, cheap for everyone else) starts off with the new Quickr hooks APIs in two ways, then we'll explore innovative ideas and take questions. The two samples are:

1) An audit utility to leave a trail of metadata for every document published - whether via a browser, Quickr connectors, PandaBear, SnappFiles, or courier pigeon. The audit data is stored in a separate database (which you can secure).

2) A methodology by which you can finally do - wait for it - room templates. In this demo Troy's taken a popular template from our shelves, QSurvey, and coded a room creation hook to take all the custom design features for something as complex as QSurvey and make them available to new rooms upon creation. But it gets better. Troy has built a "white list" mechanism so the code will only put survey code into rooms in designated places, and it can be turned on and off. And finally, he abstracted it to simple forms and views so you can control it at a granular level, but in a very easy-to-understand way. So bottom line, you can - with this hook - have a place manager call up and say 'Hey, I'd like a Survey Room," then while on the phone you do 2 seconds of work, tell them "Create a new room," and voila, it's a Survey Room. Then you can turn it off for them so other new rooms in the place are normal. Or, you can have one place that's all about Survey Rooms. The developers among you will understand how use the framework Troy has developed to do your own. Non-developers can just use it as is, or have us develop something awesome using the new APIs.

We'll finish up with a review of the API categories, some of our own ideas on what you could do with them (alone and in combination), and the take Q&A and listen to your own ideas.

The Webinar is designed to illustrate CONCEPTS and POSSIBILITIES not just the canned examples, but attendees (only) do get the code. It's worth thousands. So suit up - I mean sign up - because it's going to be legen - wait for it - dary!

Round 2

QuickImage Category Collaboration University
After a successful first week in Chicago, I took the train to O'Hare and the overnight flight to London's Heathrow, then a black cab to the offices of The Turtle Partnership. Fortunately for everyone involved from the pilot to my seatmates to the cabbie and most importantly the Turtles, I had late checkout in Chicago and was able to shower right before leaving! Upon arrival discovered three new registrations for Collaboration University in London so out with the badge paper, VPN to the accounting system, and I may have averted the annual "oh no someone else is coming Monday, go buy a color printer!" scramble. Not that I wouldn't like to be proven wrong, but it is a bit funny to have a printer set up in my hotel room for a week.

I stayed the night at the home of Mike and Sue Smith, Mike being a director at Turtle and fellow member of Penumbra, OpenNTF Alliance, and the Lotus Business Partner Advisory Council (BPAC). Mike has handled all the preparations for CU London but will for the first time not be with us next week - he is representing Turtle at the Lotus Leadership Alliance (LoLA) meeting in Cambridge. The other one.

We're now on our way from Turtle's offices to the hotel and venue for some setup with Tim Clark of IBM and will be working into the night on the labs and workshops which are fully subscribed now. Another conveyance awaits over the weekend as I take the London Underground to dinners, a few sights, and more than likely an office supply shop. For a printer.

Cheers!

Trying to stay ahead of the printer...again! CU registrations still coming in...

QuickImage Category Collaboration University
Just when we have all the agendas and name badges printed, another registration or two hits the system. It never fails...every year, when I get to London, I buy an inkjet printer for the room and end up printing one or two new badges. This thrills Gab Davis, as she has a veritable graveyard of lightly used cheap inkjet printers in her kit closet!

With six days remaining before Collaboration University Chicago and 13 days to CU London, I am now reviewing presentations and can tell you that there is really some great new technical info this year. With new versions of everything (and Sametime 8.5 indepth coverage) there are going to be more than a few revelations at this year's conferences. Here's a sample of what we're up to!
  • Warren Elsmore has labored many many weeks getting Sametime 8 on Linux, so you don't have to.
  • Gab Davis has slain more dragons than I can count working through various permutations of LTPA and LDAP to get the WebSphere-based Sametime 8.5 Meeting Center going.
  • Viktor Krantz has created several new Quickr 8.2 hook examples and "variations on a theme."
  • Troy Reimer has created three reusable examples and has been deconstructing six-figure development projects so you can understand how to plan development.
  • Chris Miller is having alphabet soup every day. LDAP, SSO, LTPA, SMTP...you get the idea.
  • Julian Robichaux and Jerald Mahurin have written sessions for others to deliver (yay for the home team!) on data transfer, migrations, and support.
  • Carl Tyler has cooked up new Sametime API examples, and will show you how to customize the new Sametime 8.5 web client - very cool stuff here.
  • Mitch Cohen and Stuart McIntyre have teamed up to get you up and running on Connections 2.5, and show you how to make the biggest impact with light customization.
  • Tim Clark and Kat McGivney are preparing lab machines, working on VM transfers onsite and generally being indispensable.
  • Our IBM guest speakers Louis Richardson, Darren Adams, Miki Banatwala, David Kajmo, and Rob Ingram are showing us the future...and how Quickr kicks Sharepoint squarely in the ECM.

There are slots remaining, and the ROI is pretty clear, so feel free to register online today.

Collaboration University - trying out some new things

QuickImage Category Collaboration University
Sent last night to our mailing list, news about the innovations we have planned for CU!

By now you're aware that Collaboration University 2009 for Lotus Quickr, Sametime and Connections registration is officially open. And, we've been working hard behind the scenes, assembling an incredible lineup of 35+ sessions to address all of the changes in Lotus software this year.

Collaboration University is the only conference focused specifically on Lotus's Web 2.0 technologies, and is independently produced by industry experts. Now in our 4th year, Collaboration University has gained a reputation as a high-quality, limited capacity, affordable conference experience that puts you in touch with well-known experts. This year is no different - spend time with Carl Tyler, Gab Davis, Chris Miller, Warren Elsmore, Rob Novak, Viktor Krantz, Julian Robichaux, Troy Reimer, Kathleen McGivney, Jerald Mahurin, Stuart McIntyre, Mitch Cohen, and several IBMers and guest speakers who work with real-life deployments for a living. We've just completed session planning, and you can review the session list below or here. In addition, here are some of the conference experience innovations we have in store this year:
  • "Show Then Tell" approach - at the beginning of the conference, we'll show you completed configurations and finished applications, so you have context for the individual breakout sessions. Why should you piece it together?
  • "Ask me about..." Each speaker is assigned a topic of expertise, clearly identified on a button, to help guide you to the right expert on a topic of interest to you (i.e. Dom.Doc to Quickr migration, Sametime upgrades, Clustering, etc.).
  • "Field Trips" to the labs - instead of disjointed lab exercises, we have selected specific session material that is better experienced than listened to. Your speaker may just stop teaching and take you to the lab to try a new technique yourself!

There are still some IBM-sponsored deals left on rooms ($124 in Chicago, as low as 114 GBP in London, if you can believe it!), but they are going fast. As well, the early registration deadline is August 1, 2009. The earlier you register, the better your chance at minimal travel expense!

Dates: September 14-16, Chicago and September 21-23, London

    Website: http://www.CollaborationUniversity.com

Deadline: Saturday August 1, midnight CDT for early registration.

Look for more details on the website and in my next Quickr & Sametime newsletter, where I'll be featuring Quickr performance and Sametime development...

Announcement: Collaboration University 2009 Keynote Speakers!

QuickImage Category Collaboration University
I'm pleased to welcome two new faces to Collaboration University 2009 to help us kick off the most exciting year we've ever had for CU! With Sametime 8.5, Connections 2.5, and Quickr 8.2 all hitting the streets this year - and with the major technology changes there and in the near future, it's great to have IBMers back this year to keynote the event and give us a heads-up on Lotus's  strategy in the Web 2.0 space.
A picture named M2 In Chicago, we'll hear from Louis Richardson, Lotus Worldwide Sales Executive for Lotus Collaborative Document Services. Louis, at IBM the past five years, has been instrumental in helping get the word out about Collaboration University inside IBM, where all the events, dates and even links on the IBM website are helpful. I've known Louis for several years and know he will be an exciting and insightful speaker. Besides, anyone who gives me a picture on a sailboat has to be cool.
A picture named M3 In London, we're joined by Darren Adams, Messaging and Collaboration Business Unit Executive for North East Europe. Which, as it turns out, includes the UK, Ireland, Switzerland and Austria (fairly south and west for northeast!). Many of you know Darren from his blog at http://www.dadams.co.uk where, among other things, he shares his insights on Lotus software. Darren was recently promoted to this very long title, so please congratulate him when you see him in London! Dareen's a long time friend of Collaboration University, having helped out with arrangements a little more each year.

Please join us in Chicago and London to learn about the strategy and direction of Lotus's Web 2.0 lineup of software - Quickr, Sametime and Connections!

Collaboration University open for registration - first week was great - IBM speaker requests?

QuickImage Category Collaboration University
Well last week's opening of Collaboration University registration went quite well, our best opening week ever! I'll share more details as we get closer, but we've also managed to secure some incredible deals on hotels. Unheard of rates for Chicago ($124!!?!) for the first 20 or so people while they last, and an equally impressive £114 for London, also while they last. And these aren't dark alley hotels, they are the places the speakers and organizers are staying.

Early registration is the way to go - you get a $200 USD savings on the reg fee, plus you get a crack at one of these hotel deals.

Now that the sales pitch is over - I want to hear from attendees! The best way to give me feedback is to follow @CollabU on Twitter! But in case you're not a Twitter person, feel free to send email directly to cu2009 at CollaborationUniversity dot com. Here's what I'd like to know:

1. Who from IBM would you like us to invite to speak? We've already sent invitations to the product and development managers.
2. What specific topics would you like covered? We also ask this on the registration forms...so you can answer there too!
3. If you're an alumni, what should we be sure not to change, and what would you like to see done differently? Barring venue changes and massive overhauls, we'll do what we can to accommodate your requests!

Thanks - and see you in September...

Collaboration University welcomes guest speakers

QuickImage Category Collaboration University
Collaboration University is pleased to welcome back the Usual Suspects - Chris Miller, Carl Tyler, Warren Elsmore, Gab & Tim Davis, and the SNAPPS gang, but this year we have also invited some guest speakers to cover a few Lotus Connections topics...

Mitch Cohen from Colgate reprises his role as the guest alumni and customer speaker, where he will dazzle us with IBM Lotus Connections 2.5 deployment tips and best practices.

Stuart MacIntyre of Collaboration Matters and author of just a few blogs will join us for a session on Connections 2.5 customization - including profiles, TDI and custom themes. This is in direct response to a CU 2008 alumni request I received a few weeks ago (the request was for the topics...sorry, Stuart!)

Kathleen McGivney, of we-go-way-back fame (Kat and I were co-authors on a QuickPlace Redbook 8 years ago!) and now a solo consultant will be designing some of our new format Quickr and Sametime labs, and joining us in Chicago to help run them.

Welcome to the gang, Mitch, Stuart and Kat!

More announcements and news about CU 2009 registration, topics and a brand new concept all coming in days...for more up-to-date information be sure to follow @CollabU on Twitter...

Collaboration University 2009 Announced - CU in Chicago and London this September!

QuickImage Category Collaboration University
It's hard to believe but here come the 9th and 10th installations of Collaboration University!

I'm pleased to announce that we'll be producing Collaboration University 2009 at the great venues we found last year in Chicago and London.

In Chicago we'll once again be at the IBM Innovation Center, located on the Chicago River a few blocks from Michigan Avenue. It is a great place to have the size and type of conference we produce - last year we sold out, the venue size and food were terrific, and the location was central to a lot of Chicago activity. In London we return to IBM South Bank, just a few blocks from Waterloo station, Marriott County Hall, the London Eye, and accessible from all over central London. Our dates (both start on a Monday and run through Wednesday):

Chicago: September 14-16, 2009
London: September 21-23, 2009

We'll open registration next month, and even though we sold out both venues last year we will not be raising the fees! In fact, for alumni we are continuing last year's introduction of a discount per year of attendance so your fees may even go down. More details will be available when we open registration, or you can email info@collaborationuniversity.com or me directly for budget planning purposes.

We are thrilled to have these venues again and pleased to welcome back the core team of experts who have made Collaboration University such a success - Gab and Tim Davis, Carl Tyler, Warren Elsmore, Chris Miller, and of course the team from SNAPPS. We're working once again with IBM to bring guest speakers with fresh content based on the newest and future versions of Quickr and Sametime (and a little Connections!). And, we'll be welcoming a few other guests to present and share their experience with the products.

Of course no Collaboration University event would be the same without a few new "features" - so in addition to the excellent post-con workshops I'll be adding more value with a special event during the conference. I can't disclose it yet as the details are being worked out, but suffice it to say that it will be very complementary to the technical content you get all week.

So now - today - what you can do is to visit the CU website and sign up to receive notification when registration opens. You'll want to register early to take advantage of discounts, and given that we're in the same venues that sold out last year weeks before the conference, well, early is good!

Thanks to all the CU alumni, speakers, IBMers and others who have made it possible for us to produce Collaboration University. CU in September!

Day 23: Back Home - Every Conference was a Success...Now there's that other one...

Category Lotus Leadership Alliance Collaboration University UKLUG
23 days after alighting from Kansas City for Washington, Chicago, Fort Myers, Miami, London, and Hollywood FL, I returned home and gave my TV a great big hug. Priorities.

Speaking of priorities, it was a big morning for writing Lotusphere abstracts! I was happy to find the term "noon" had left some room for interpretation. We really needed some post-CU time to discuss and decide what will be submitted. Didn't have time to Jam them I'm afraid - I hope that doesn't hurt our chances.

So in addition to all the excellent conferences, some things happened during my absence that I usually shout about - new product versions, very good news for the Quickr Templates, and more. So I'll put together some newsletter fodder this weekend and send that all out on Monday concurrently with another blog entry. Or two.

But first, off to pick up my son, who I last saw on Wednesday September 3rd. Time for the weekend!

Last night in London

QuickImage Category Collaboration University UKLUG Travel
A wonderful second and final day at UKLUG manning the reg desk, being the official photographer, and taking my true position in the world. Dinner with friends and some people I've never met (some lovely, some a bit snookered) at The Cinnamon Club - a truly brilliant high-end Indian cuisine in Westminster. Then a stop off at the 4-star hotel bar (the bar is in photo 2, our very room is photo 4) for a nightcap before the 4-hour nap under the glow of Parliament and Big Ben. UKLUG has been a big success and promises for more than one reason to be even bigger next year. I'll let others explain that.

In the morning we fly Virgin to Miami, something like 9 hours during which time I'll read, sleep about 4 minutes, and partake of more than one movie - did I mention Virgin's media system is phenomenal?

More from LoLA in a couple days. Cheers!

Collaboration University is a Wrap, UKLUG is in Full Swing...Week 3 of Road Trip

QuickImage Category Collaboration University UKLUG Travel
A picture named M2

As Collaboration University 2008 - London comes to a close, with as great a time as we've all had the past two weeks (and a big thanks to George, Tim, Lewis, and the other IBMers who pitched in), it's all go for UKLUG on Thursday and Friday. Warren and gang have done a bang-up job of organizing UKLUG . Liz and I are helping work the registration desk, and I'm reprising my ILUG role of unofficial photographer.

Then, back to Miami for LoLA on Sunday! The Lotus Leadership Alliance conference in Hollywood, Florida is a first-time gathering of several customer councils with IBM executives to explore the path Lotus has taken and is taking with strategy and products. I'll be there with two other SNAPPS folks fulfilling our responsibilities as members of the Lotus Global Customer Partnership Council (GCPC). it doesn't hurt that one of the welcome receptions is on the beach!

So day 15 on the road, and while I long for some time with my son and a good BBQ on the deck, to drive my own car and watch my ridiculously large TV, the travel has been good so far. The hotel here in London is wonderful - we have a suit with a river view of the Thames, and Parliament and Big Ben are lit up straight out the window at night. A rickety and slanted (or was it just Bill Buchan? One has to ask) boat bar is across the Albert Embankment (the street), so unfrozen fish and chips are minutes away. Having partaken of that once, we've since limited it to beers there and gone twice to Belgo Centraal for great dinners with friends.

So thanks once again to all speakers, IBMers and especially the attendees at CU this year for filling the rooms and all the great feedback on the events. We're looking forward to next year already!

Another Day in London, Secret Stuff, and Another Full House!

QuickImage Category Collaboration University
Another day in London - though it feels like just one day all melted together since waking up Thursday morning in Naples. The drive across Alligator Alley, five conference calls, the flight over on Virgin Atlantic (which I highly recommend if you like movies - their system has 50+ On-Demand movies), the taxi to Turtles, car to IBM, then the hotel, and a need to push through to late at night before sleeping a few hours. We'll call that day Thur-I-Tur-Day. Somewhere in there I moved rooms too - needed a bit more space for staging. And we also took a walk on the Thames where the Thames Festival was in full swing - some 50,000 people at any given time enjoying the beautiful weather, shops, booths, and entertainment.

Today, Sunday, was a nice late wake-up (oops), then a bit of project work for a client - integrating QContacts and QPresent into a new application for a demo tomorrow (not mine!). Instructions written, Sametime chatted, etc. Everyone's happy.

Viktor, Jerald, Troy and Julian all had time in the morning to wander, then their evil taskmaster boss gave them a few wrap-up items to do. Not related to CU, but definitely related to Quickr and Sametime. We'll have a few announcements this week.

Now somewhere in the middle of Thur-I-Tur-Day, in order to prove me wrong, three more people registered for Collaboration University in London. So as it sits, we are oversubscribed by two. And oversubscribed for the workshops by six. We'll figure it out. We were three over in Chicago too.

So as is my did-it-last-year-so-now-it's-a-tradition, I stole away to the Apple Store on Regent Street (LOVE that one) and bought a color printer, just so they could have proper name badges. I did this last year as well, and the Turtles got to keep it. Mike says it sits on a shelf, and they'll happily put this one right next to it. This year's one-use-only printer is a little nicer though, an HP Photosmart C4280, which has a scanner on top and worked flawlessly out of the box with my MacBook Pro. That might convince them to hook it up. Or Warren might take it, who knows. Wrong power cable for me!

CU London Attendees - Check Your Spam Filters

QuickImage Category Collaboration University
Some of our Chicago attendees mentioned that they had not received the welcome email with the directions to access our video pre-conference sessions. That message was sent 4 days before the conference started, but as it came from our newsletter engine it was caught in some spam filters. Some found it in Postini, some in their other spam products. For London folks, the email just went out an hour ago - so if you don't see it, check those spam filters!

Oh and for London - the most important piece of information in the welcome email is the address: 76 Upper Ground. The registration emails said "Upper Grand" which even a London cab driver can't find (and those guys are good!).

See you all in London!

Collaboration University Chicago Day 3

QuickImage Category Collaboration University
Last night met up with a few folks and headed to Osteria Via Stato, a family-style-but-classy Italian restaurant on North State. Excellent dinner, martinis with blue cheese olives, and NO ROOM for dessert whatsoever. A quick stop at the champagne bar across the street with a Taittinger and strawberries, and it was a complete Chicago experience.

But I digress from my normal recap. Today was brilliant, we got to see (but not blog) some Sametime and Quickr futures - things under consideration and for which IBM was seeking feedback. Then kicked off the famous "Bringing it all Together", but with a twist...to be revealed in my next post...

09/09/2008

Collaboration University Chicago Day 2

QuickImage Category Collaboration University
Session after session after session (and four more) today. Three tracks with two of them breakout sessions, and a morning "Feedback to IBM" in room three. Then in the afternoon the Connections Lab was open once again, affording attendees the ability to choose their technical level and do one of four activities on the Connections setup. Many thanks to George Brichacek and Lisa Woody for running the labs, and Jelan Heidelberg and Kim Artlip for setting up the feedback sessions - where attendees "voted" on some of the things IBM is considering for future Quickr and Sametime versions.  These weren't the only items under consideration, and definitely there are some things that are foregone conclusions - fixes or retirement of antiquated but built-in features.

Overall a very busy, long day. I was pleased to hear applause even toward the end of the day. Means some people were still alive!

Tomorrow, our Sametime and Quickr futures sessions, the "Bringing it all Together", where all the remaining speakers give their "best 10 minutes". Always a favorite, both for us and the audience. Finally, our Quickr admin and development workshops - three more signed up during the conference so we sure hope everyone is good friends when they're in the same room!

Collaboration University Chicago Day 1

QuickImage Category Collaboration University
Day 1 was a whirlwind of finely-tuned presentations. The speakers really seem at home here - this being the 7th CU conference they should! We had a great start - most would say because I broke my own mold and actually kicked off the conference with a 6-minute introduction - and kept it to 6 minutes...unlike 2006, where I planned a 6-minute introduction that went 24 minutes. Here are my opening slides - most of you will know this is uncharacteristically short for me!

In the middle of the slides, each of the presenters introduced themselves to the packed room, then explained what their focus would be for the conference (well, SOME of them did that only AFTER lamenting their session scheduling!).

The most important slide is the one below - representing the fact that at Collaboration University, we really do represent a good chunk of the Sametime and Quickr user base. These people will also have the opportunity to provide their input to IBM as to the top priorities for the products - Quickr, Sametime and Connections too. It was great to see an attendee, Handly Cameron from Atlanta, posting "Day 1" updates to his own blog during the day.

Our keynote address "Collaboration When it Counts" was a big success. Col. Ed Hackett was a lively and engaging speaker - explaining the role of collaboration in all aspects of his 25-year career in the Marines - from interactions with the flight deck of carriers when he was commanding officer of a flight crew, to his work with the Joint Chiefs on information sharing initiatives, to humanitarian aid in Somalia and other world hotspots, to his current work that brought us together, mostly over Sametime chats at 3 AM!  Julian posted a great summary of his talk.

Last thing tonight, the speakers met for a great dinner at "Shikago" - a block down the street from our hotel. Great food and wine, great stories, great fun. Can't wait for tomorrow!

Insane ramp-up, and I'm not even there

Category Collaboration University
I don't know whether to quote Mel Brooks "It's good to be the king!", George S. Patton "Don't tell people how to do things, tell them what to do and let them surprise you with their results.", or - more likely - Groucho Marx "Only one man in a thousand is a leader of men -- the other 999 follow women."

While I have spent 36 hours in videoconferences in Washington DC, the frenzy of preparation, packing, printing and some other fine gerund that would have made that a swell alliteration have been going on in SNAPPS land. Flurries of emails went ignored by me or got terse "you decide" answers today, probably dropping jaws all over Kansas, Georgia, Canada, London and the world. I gave up the reins. I delegated. I asked how things went. New signs came in, new sessions, labs came together, the guys deep-sixed a hotfix that actually hotbreaks.

And HEY YOU PEOPLE SIGNING UP TODAY for Monday, I will not be undermined as the king of procrastination! How dare you! OK, fine. You get a seat. Viktor has to sit in the corner. Poor Viktor, 16-hour days all week. He'll probably want a cot to sleep on in that corner.

Tomorrow morning, Dulles to Midway, meet Liz and Melissa and head on over (told you I follow women). Badges! Boxes! Tech checks! I defy anyone to have more fun than me tomorrow. Seriously. Oh, and if you do register tomorrow for the, like, one chair left, your badge will probably be in crayon. Hope you don't mind.

Nite folks - reading back I think I'm a little punchy on 2.75 hours sleep last night. Or I've been reading Steve McDonagh and it's rubbing off. Brilliant guy.

Six seats left before the Fire Marshall/Brigade steps in

QuickImage Category Collaboration University
The past week has been a whirlwind of final-countdown activity towards next week's Collaboration University in Chicago. Both Troy and Julian flew to KC last week for our own final prep, the rest of the speakers are submitting their final drafts, and the video production is going live for our pre-conference sessions tomorrow or Thursday.

And while there was a bit of a pile-on last Thursday and Friday for registration, it appears that there could be as many as four chairs left in the room on Monday morning. That is, unless we have some last-minute registrations. So - hope you like your neighbors, because the likelihood of getting an empty seat next to yours is pretty low when we're all together. And, we have only two possible spots left in the post-conference workshops (that's after wrangling together an extra 20 laptops!).

Checking in on London, where the facility has 10 fewer spots, it appears we have about 2 seats left in the main session. Of course there, we have a window at the back of the room with a nice patio, so I suppose we COULD have some people outside with their noses pressed against the windows. It would be unattractive, but I suppose workable. Or, I could be nice and have some speakers step outside while the general sessions are underway. (Yes, I'd do that!) In London, we're 3 laptops short for workshops, so a few people will be using their own machines, or we'll give up our own for an afternoon.

Suffice it to ay I'm extremely pleased that this year we have the right size venues, the largest attendance yet, and the perfect mix of new content delivered both live and via pre-conference video.

There are still those six chairs, folks. So if you want the opportunity to fill one of them, now is the time! Go over to the website, review the final agendas, and register!

See you in Chicago or London!

The Top 10 Things to do Right After Installing Quickr

QuickImage Category Collaboration University Quickr
I've mentioned before that we're creating pre-conference video sessions for Collaboration University in order to "level the playing field" on day one - that is, to deliver the most basic sessions before the conference starts so we can provide a more advanced learning experience even for those new to the products. It also lets us conduct the conference in 3 days while still offering almost 40 sessions. With seven or eight of these video sessions already assigned, I hadn't planned on doing one myself. But then the guilt got hold of me for being Mr Delegation Guy, and I decided to summarize nine years of experience deploying and developing for Quickr (and it's previous names) and do one myself with the above title.

While the full session is for CU attendees, it'd be mean of me not to share the list. So I'll be nice. My decision in choosing this topic came out of the experience I've had with the majority of Quickr customers who have deployed on their own, or even with assistance, and at some point faced tough decisions, ran into brick walls, or seen their deployments run amok. In some cases, my recommendations are just common sense responses to IBM's packaging or deployment choices that cause problems down the road (in other words, product problems). And while not every suggestion is for every operation, I'm confident that most of them will apply in any given company.

So without further ado:

10. If you just installed Quickr using an administrator's name from the directory, STOP. UNINSTALL. READ THE DOC AND START OVER.  This is perhaps the most common initial mistake and it causes numerous difficult-to-diagnose problems until the question is asked, answered, and the admin is trying to reverse engineer ten years of underlying authentication code to get themselves out of the jam.

9. Clean up notes.ini, and move qptool server task lines to program documents. If your Quickr server isn't the administration server (it shouldn't be, unless it's all by its lonesome), you don't need to run, say, the Design task at 1 AM. And three qptool activities at 4 AM...three java programs on a Domino server kicking off at the same time. Bad idea, my friends. Bad idea.

8. Set up Multi Server Single Sign On (MSSO, yes I know it's missing an S, don't ask). Do not use single server, and basic is kinda...amateur.

7. Hunt and forage for all the REAL proper field settings for your desired upload and download file restrictions. Hint, they're not in the doc.

6. Set up poor man's backup, right away, for rapid recovery of places, rooms or documents. Rotate it nightly. Hint, it uses qptool archive and a USB or SATA drive. Then let the admin folks (or you, I suppose) deal with transaction logging, backup APIs, tapes, offsite storage, and all their regulatory mumbo-jumbo on their own time. In the meantime, I can set up a recoverable system in about 20 minutes.

5. Remove the old themes from the "Select a Theme" UI. Really. Now. They are UGLY, sometimes broken, and inappropriate for the product. Bad idea again. Worse than the first one.

4. Set up a custom invitation script. Control your own text in invitations to places, and free yourself from IBM branding. The example from Lotus Devcon 2000 in Las Vegas still works. What? Don't have the backpack? Search my blog for "invitations", I posted the whole thing three years ago. Still works.

3. Take the Standard Template for Teams. Make a place. Change Basics. Make choices appropriate for your company. Make it a placetype. Hide the Standard Template for Teams. Now it's yours.

2. Make a custom login form. Unless, of course, you like advertising for IBM and pointing out capabilities you might not want to expose yet, like connectors to Microsoft Office.

1. And the number one recommendation for Quickr deployments....drumrolll...

Make it Lotus week in London...CU+UKLUG=Nirvana!

Category UKLUG Collaboration University

A picture named M2

In the months running up to industry events that we produce and organize, it's inevitable that organizers will be very focused on their own events. Take for instance the strangely intertwined lives of myself and Warren Elsmore - Warren has, with the UKLUG team, been putting together a brilliant program for UKLUG, while as expected, I've been focusing on Collaboration University.

Now Warren is one of the partners speaking at CU with four sessions on SSO and Clustering, and in fact I'll be speaking at UKLUG with my session "Lazy Development: One Line Wonders for Domino Applications". And to be honest folks, it's no accident that CU runs Mon-Wed September 15-17 and UKLUG runs Thur-Fri September 18-19! Liz and I are staying over, and Julian will be sticking around as well. After both events, I travel to Miami for LoLA...more on that later.

But here's a wild and crazy idea. If you're coming to CU, tack on a couple days and register (while there's room) for UKLUG! It's free, covers a variety of Lotus-centric topics, and who knows, I might buy you a beer (or two)! And if you're coming to UKLUG and want a deep-dive into Sametime and Quickr, have a look at CU. There's no overlap in the programs, so you can truly make the week of September 15th into a great training experience - with more than 50 sessions between the two events!

Let's make it "Lotus Week in London"...hmmm, I can hear a tune in my head...

From the Collaboration University Studios

QuickImage Category Collaboration University
One of the new benefits we have this year at Collaboration University is the creation of pre-conference sessions as videos for attendees. They will be posted the week before the conference and range from 20 minutes to an hour in length - whatever the topic dictates. The past couple years, we've noted that coming into CU people have a variety of skill sets and are at different levels of expertise in different subjects. This is to be expected of any group, but with the intense training we tend to put together, it creates a conference producer's dilemma - some people really can use the basics, while some are beyond them and want to dive right into more advanced topics. For instance in 2007, we had a number of people who were new to Sametime, and two from IBM who were responsible for the entire IBM Sametime infrastructure as attendees. See the problem?

Our approach the past two years has been to quickly get the basics out of the way on the first day then progress rapidly into meatier stuff by afternoon. Even so, we'd get a few complaints from those who have more experience, because they already knew all the morning content. That worked "OK", but this year with the delivery of these early sessions outside the confines of the three onsite days, we've found a great solution. Those who need and want the basics get them - and can attend all of these sessions on their own time - and those who don't are not missing anything because we're starting the conference at a higher level.

Of course the side benefit is that instead of 30 sessions, we are delivering nearly 40. More work for us, more content for you. We decided to do the following sessions as pre-conference videos (subject to change), and I'm considering adding one more myself...you'll not the conspicuous absence of my name here...

- Basics of the Dojo Toolkit (Viktor)
- Using DDM in your Sametime and Quickr Environment (Gab)
- Installing Sametime Standard Server (Chris)
- Domino Reporting & SNMP Traps (Warren)
- Installing and Configuring Eclipse for Sametime Plug-in Development (Carl)
- REST for the Lazy Developer (Julian)
- Fundamentals of Quickr Development: Forms, Themes, and Placebots (Jerald)
- Deconstructing Quickr: Understanding Quickr Behind the Scenes (Troy)

As an example, Carl Tyler put together this 5-minute segment of his pre-conference video on Installing and Configuring Eclipse for Sametime Plug-in Development. It is the prerequisite session for his live session on creating Sametime plug-ins (makes sense), and in the full session you can follow along and prepare your own machine to be ready to use those live materials. Enjoy!

Just the vector, Viktor...a whole lot of them

QuickImage Category Collaboration University QuickrTemplates.com SnappShot

With 3 weeks remaining before Collaboration University's biggest events yet, we're almost all heads-down working on completing client projects and writing demos and presentations. I say almost because Julian has hit the ground running and taken charge of a long-awaited update to our QuickrTemplates.com site where soon we will make several announcements and unveil enhancements to further template development and support for the Quickr community.

We're also working on a SnappShot 8 upgrade, working with some of the newer features in the DDA API. Hey, that sounds like I know something! Seriously, I don't. But we're running debug code on the Sametime dev server this week and hope to wrap it up before leaving on what for me will be a whirlwind tour of D.C.->Chicago->Naples->Miami->London->Miami->Home over 22 days.

As if this weren't enough, we have a client whose legal requirements for engaging with us involves the procurement of our resumes. Of the seven requested, we had four very out of date, two new ones, and well...I last wrote a resume in 1993 using PFS: First Choice on the laptop provided for my first Masters' degree. So I have some work to do!

Announcing the Collaboration University 2008 Chicago Keynote: "Collaboration when it Counts"

QuickImage Category Collaboration University

I can't begin to explain how cool this is.

We have a very different approach to our keynote address for Collaboration University in Chicago this year. With so many high-level IBMers already helping out, I thought it would be an interesting and exciting change to invite someone whose experience with collaboration and teamwork extends beyond office walls, beyond mobile devices, beyond laptops. Someone whose work in this area REALLY COUNTS.

Colonel Ed Hackett, USMC (Ret.), now president of EH-Group, Inc. has agreed to be our keynote speaker at Collaboration University 2008 in Chicago. I have had the pleasure of working with Ed for nearly a year in the advanced collaboration space and am thrilled that he is available to join us. The topic of his keynote address is "Collaboration when it Counts", and will represent quite a different "30,000 foot overview" than you're used to at our industry events!

Here is a little more about our guest speaker:

A picture named M2 Ed Hackett is the President of EH-Group, Inc. a consulting firm specializing in the national defense and homeland security arena.  His company supports several strategic level projects on Maritime Security and Maritime Domain Awareness for the federal government.

Ed is a retired Marine Colonel, a fighter pilot, and test pilot.  In his twenty-five year career as a Marine, Ed's journeys provided an extensive exposure to the many diverse and exciting cultures around the globe.  His last military assignment was on the Joint Staff, at the Pentagon, where he focused on global security engagement.

Ed is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, The United States Naval Test Pilot School, and the United States Air Force Air War College.

So please join me in welcoming Ed to Chicago! And yes, he probably will get there a lot faster than any of us...

Collaboration University agendas posted - in a very sexy Domino application

QuickImage Category Collaboration University Quickr Sametime Connections Domino

The Collaboration University website was updated last night to include a "Web 2.0" agenda and an updated speakers page...all with dynamic links to sessions and speakers. This falls under the category of "what do you get when you put together Domino, JSON, Dojo or your favorite toolkit, Photoshop, Viktor and too much Red Bull"?

Sexy. Very sexy.

Not Carl specifically, I won't say that. Even if he does.

So go on over to the site, have a look at the agenda and speakers pages - roll over things, change days, play around - it's a very cool data-driven Domino application and handy to boot!

Don't forget, if you're coming to CU this year you also get some sessions before the conference, all available online.

QuickImage Category Collaboration University

I'm the one who changes the price systems for Collaboration University on the website and in the accounting system...and I'm flying home from vacation today...arriving home after midnight...so I guess the early discount didn't expire yesterday. It expires when I wake up tomorrow and have enough coffee!

A table of our very own

QuickImage Category Collaboration University

With today's registrations processed for Collaboration University 2008 for Quickr, Sametime, and it seems more-than-a-little Connections, we nudged past the magic number that qualifies our attendees to bypass the normal building security desk...making the entry to the IBM Innovation Center much faster and smoother. We will have our own separate table in front of security for CU delegates to check in like VIPs, with preprinted building badges and instructions to the IBM floor. In case you don't recognize it, the building to the right where we're having CU is also the Hyatt World Headquarters. The building features extensive landscaping both inside and outside from bamboo groves, complete with fountains, lining the lobby to green grass in raised curved stone planters that surround the building.

A few more people and we'll have our own elevator, cafe, shoe shine guy...

Thanks for registering today, those who did. The rest, there's a week of early discounts left. Well four days. Probably a week though since I modify the registration application myself, and don't like to stay up so late!

Expense Report: Chicago CU Hotels for the Adventurous...or Simply Frugal

QuickImage Category Collaboration University

Byline: Guest Blogger Liz Novak, Loyola of Chicago Graduate

As reported here last Thursday, the Chicago hotels with the IBM rates have filled up. So, we got busy – and creative! – and did extensive research to help you find reasonably priced rooms at locations easily accessible to the Collaboration University Chicago campus, a.k.a. the IBM Innovation Center. Our criteria? Great neighborhoods, proximity to the famous "El" trains, and less than $200/night (Note from Rob: "El" is short for "Elevated" - trains that are mostly 25 ft above the Chicago streets...). Here's what we found for you …

One great option is to stay at any of the hotels near Midway Airport (click here for a list of hotels and contact info). All these properties cater to business travelers, so they're well-equipped with Internet access, many provide complimentary breakfast every morning, and all offer a free shuttle service to Midway Airport and the "Orange Line" El train. Just hop on the train going downtown and disembark at the Quincy Station. From there, it's a short walk to the IBM Innovation Center at the corner of Wacker and Franklin.

We also found some deals on hotels near the "friendly confines" of Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs. This vibrant neighborhood is full of great restaurants and night-life, and there's just something charming about the El stop right next to the venerable ballpark. A quick look at the pennants flying over the stadium shows you the rankings of the National and American league teams that day! The El trip is a bit shorter from there than if you're staying near Midway Airport, and it would be a great place to target if you want to truly experience Chicago.

If you're looking for something a little quieter, check out the hotels we found in Evanston. Home to Northwestern University (Note from Rob: ..."and birthplace of Rob Novak"...sorry, couldn't resist honey...), Evanston is just a little north of Chicago proper, right on the lake. Again, it's an easy El ride from the Evanston hotels to the Quincy Station, and the Chicago Transit Authority maps seem to indicate that there are express trains during rush hour from Evanston into downtown Chicago.

Click here for the list of hotels near Wrigley Field and in Evanston. And check out this great printable map of the entire El system. It's fast, easy, convenient, much less expensive than taxis, and ready for you to explore!

Common Sense Disclaimer: We've tried our best to provide accurate, detailed directions for walking to the El stations from these various hotels, as well as which El lines to take. However, we've done all that from maps, and not by going to every property and pacing it out ourselves. Therefore, please verify directions with your hotel's front desk before taking off. They might be able to give you better directions and let you know about things only the "locals" know.

Collaboration University Chicago - hotels filling up, one killer deal left

QuickImage Category Collaboration University

Melissa just did our "hotel watch" on Chicago hotels for the week of September 8, and two of the three killer deals are now gone. For those who have yet to make arrangements, please make sure you visit the Collaboration University website's Locations page for the latest downloadable list of hotels and rates we've researched. Of course there are more online, but this seems to be a busy week in Chicago!

If you're still on the fence, consider this - the remaining killer deal is the IBM visitor rate at the Drake Hotel (where I've stayed at full rates several times, it's gorgeous) at $130 per night. In Chicago. For a 4-star Hilton hotel. Expedia shows $379. That has to be the best deal in town. There's a similar price at a 2.5-star Midway hotel (not an IBM rate), but of course the transportation is a little more involved. The Drake is walkable on a nice day, about 25 minutes, or a sub-$10 cab ride. Of course, you may have a corporate rate somewhere else, but this is really a good deal as long as rooms are available.

UPDATE Monday July 21: Looks like you filled up the Drake on Friday. Looking for more good deals...

If you're procrastinating on travel planning, or need a good reason to get your manager to push the paperwork through, this is it. 53 days seems like a long time, but it isn't when it comes to getting a great deal on accommodations in a big city.

Travel tip: If you stay at the Drake, or even if not, visit the John Hancock building, seen in the photo above. There's an Observatory on the top floor that's educational and dizzying at the same time. And for a very swanky drinks hour, definitely visit the Signature Room on the 95th floor. You can usually get a booth or table at the bar, and if there's one by the window grab it fast. Spectacular views.

Curious Mitch Goes to Chicago

QuickImage Category Collaboration University

In the past year it's become pretty apparent that there's a guy out there who has significant experience with Lotus Connections in a real, corporate setting. As we were working on our Lotus Connections 2.0 content for Collaboration University, it became pretty clear that while the development lab stuff is pretty cool, it would be even more interesting to have some content based on real life.

So I'm pleased to announce that Mitch Cohen, a CU alumni no less, will be joining us in Chicago to share his experience and deliver a couple technical sessions with one of the partner presenters - designed to get you up and running in the most rapid fashion. We're very excited about having Mitch as an expert industry speaker who has been in the trenches and has lessons to share. And, no less proud that Mitch actually started blogging a year ago July while at Collaboration University 2007!

A preliminary list of the things he'll cover in the first session of two:

1) Introduction
2) Components of Lotus Connections (5 Min)
-      Supported OS (AIX, Linux, Windows)
-      WAS
-      DB (DB2, Oracle, MS SQL)
-      LDAP (Domino, AD, TDS, Sun, Novell)
-      Tivoli Directory Integrator
-       HTTP/Caching Proxy
3) WAS Basics (5 Min)
-      Definition of Node

4) Lotus Connections supported configurations (5 Min)
-      Pilot
-      One Profile
-      Multiple Profiles
-      Clustering
5) Preparing to install Lotus Connections (15 Min)
-      Install TDI
-      Create Databases (DB Creation Wizard)
-      Populate Profiles Database
-      Install WAS, WAS Fix Pack Installer, Fix Packs
--      Create WAS Profile(s)
--      Configure Federated Repositories
--      Configure Administrative Security
6) Installing Lotus Connections (15 Min)

8) Additional Resources

We're hard at work on the rest of the Connections content and have great support from IBM. We're even setting up a lab - in both Chicago and London - so you can get hands-on experience with the product during the conference. IBMers and CU partner experts will be on hand to answer questions and discuss your own configuration options.

Collaboration University 2008 - Workshops half full, early reg for 5 more days

QuickImage Category Collaboration University

The first three weeks of Collaboration University's new website and registration for the 2008 events have been quite eye-opening. The community is crazy for Quickr, Sametime and Connections this year...I suppose when you release two versions of everything, folks can use a little technical training. A few days into the "soft launch" of CU registration - which is what I call blogging and letting Alumni know about it - we had registrants calling saying "did you get my registration 10 minutes ago...want to be sure I get into the workshop..."  Big thanks to the Alumni who signed up right away - you get the best deal as we extended a discount to you in appreciation of your prior attendance. That discount is good regardless of any early registration deadlines. Huge thanks to those who are coming for a third year - Juniors, we'll call you.

Just a few minutes ago, out went the newsletter email notice about Collaboration University - if you read my blog you'll probably get one - with more info on the workshop concept we've cooked up this year. In short, we've designed a workshop for admins and developers to work together on a deployment (cats and dogs, living together!), and then again on a set of changes to an application. Critical changes! Must haves! Unreasonable business sponsor! (Me). All this in three hours...for about a month of experience.

A surprising percentage of registrants are choosing the do the workshop - so much that they are halfway subscribed in BOTH Chicago and London. We may have to figure ways to expand them if this keeps up.

So while I'm on the topic, it's probably good to mention that the super-duper-earlybirdy registration for June ends, well, when July starts. That's next Tuesday.
