Seatle Vacation Journal - or Lessons for Business?

QuickImage Category Vacation
We've had a gorgeous two days in Seattle so far, and the weather seems to be holding up again today. Tuesday, we visited Pike Place Market and the first Starbucks (1971), also known as Mecca. We watched as the fishmongers at Pike Place Fish expertly performed their act. For the uninitiated, this consists of tossing a couple fish (from what I've read, the same couple fish) back and forth, reciting in song what people are ordering ("canvas bag" to a tune is kinda funny), and posing for the occasional group photo. During the act, dozens of onlookers tend to pile up and spill into the aisles and the street outside the market, so one of the fishmongers has a part-time job asking people to come in closer to avoid blocking the traffic.

About 20 minutes into the show (which is come-and-go as you wish), one of the actors yelled out "hey, we sell stuff, too!" Now this obvious point (from the signage) sometimes gets lost on the crowd, who is there primarily to see the act because they read about it in Frommers, Rick Steves, or from their concierge. A nervous giggle swept through the crowd, snapping many - who had been lost in the show - back to reality. At that point, I watched in amazement as several people placed orders, some for a single crab or salmon, some for the $200 bundles to ship overnight in dry ice to their homes far away.

This episode got me thinking about our lives as business owners. There are some in our community who eschew public appearance and focus entirely on business - whose names we don't know but perhaps products we do - and some who focus on their public persona through conferences, blogging, Twitter, Facebook, and more but who, in private, admit that their business suffers. The key is to strike a balance. I and the SNAPPS gang have delivered 500 conference sessions in the past 10 years, and at times preparing for and executing public performances tends to consume us. As in, "don't even think about starting a project in January, dear customers." But at some point, when preparations are done, the slides are a wrap, the code is tested out, and the lights come on, there is always a "hey, we sell stuff, too!"

You small business partners and owners out there, are you reminding customers that you do actually provide services or have a great product? By all means, do the show. But don't get too caught up in it, you have a business to run.

Absolute final day - and no, not what you think

QuickImage Category Breast Cancer Research
You know me.

Whenever I use some kind of statement like this in headlines (this one is called the impending event close, for those of you studying sales) it has to do with something nice and commercial. For instance, you would be led to believe by my "Absolute final day" that I'd be talking about registration for CU 2009. It would be nice, sure, but this is much more important than that.

My dear friends Warren and Kitty Elsmore, after months of training, are taking to the streets TOMORROW and will be WALKING 26 MILES in support of Breast Cancer Research. This, to me, is absolutely amazing and a testament of their dedication to the cause.

Three or four years ago, I remember the Lotus user group folks gave out those pedometers at Lotusphere. I put one on, and wore it for the entire conference, Saturday through Thursday. I walked just 23 miles that entire Lotusphere, and boy my dogs were tired every single night. I've run 5k races and then needed a day off work. So needless to say, this act is not only selfless but they've earned the respect and admiration of many in the Lotus community as evidenced by the number of donations they've received. Even the small donations make a difference.

Segue? Yes. You're good.

Today is the final day you can pitch in a few quid (yes Americans, you can donate, all that fancy conversion stuff happens at the bank). So don't think about it. Just give. Please.

Best deal on Collaboration University 2009 ends this week, Sametime 8.5 to be covered!

QuickImage Category Collaboration Unviersity
Just posting this reminder that Collaboration University 2009 for Lotus Quickr, Sametime and Connections has a deadline fast approaching! In fact, the early bird registration deadline is this Saturday, June 20th so if you would like to save an additional $200 on attendance at this industry-leading event, you need to act this week.

Collaboration University is the only conference worldwide focused specifically on Lotus's Web 2.0 technologies, and is delivered and produced by industry experts. Now in our 4th year, Collaboration University has gained a reputation as a high-quality, limited capacity, affordable conference experience that puts you in touch with well-known experts. This year is no different - spend time with Carl Tyler, Gab Davis, Chris Miller, Warren Elsmore, Rob Novak, Viktor Krantz, Julian Robichaux, Troy Reimer, Kathleen McGivney, Jerald Mahurin, Stuart McIntyre, Mitch Cohen, and several IBMers and guest speakers who work with real-life deployments for a living.

This year is unique for Lotus and for Collaboration University. Every product in the lineup has a new version and we're covering it all.
Quickr 8.2, Connections 2.5, and - just confirmed - we will have exclusive technical coverage of Sametime 8.5, which represents the most significant technology change in the history of Sametime. If you work with these technologies, you can't afford to miss Collaboration University 2009.

Did I mention affordable? Not only have we kept the conference fee the same as 2008, we've also extended more discounts to alumni, arranged for discount hotels ($124 in Chicago, as low as 114 GBP in London, if you can believe it!), and continue to offer early registration discounts. But again, the biggest one is going away this Saturday at midnight CDT!

Dates:
September 14-16, Chicago and September 21-23, London

Website:
http://www.CollaborationUniversity.com

Deadline:
This Saturday, June 20, midnight CDT for the best possible deal!

Announcement: Brand new template added to SNAPPS Quickr Templates

Category QuickrTemplates.com
A picture named M2

I'm happy to announce a new addition to the FREE templates for Lotus Quickr over on QuickrTemplates.com!

Jerald Mahurin at SNAPPS has just completed the first version of QMessage - a secure project messaging template designed to keep project communications together, secure, and OUT OF YOUR INBOX.

The concept is simple. In addition to a standard Quickr place for your project, QMessage adds an email-like memo form and two views for an "Inbox" and "Sent". There's a lot more to it in the background, but I'll keep it simple.

The memo "To" field is restricted to place members. When a message is "sent", the template's business logic saves copies of the memo for each recipient with security set to their authentication credentials. The recipients automatically receive notification that they HAVE a message waiting, and a link, but none of the content (subject, rich text, or attachments) ever leaves the Quickr place. Users are pulled into the place to correspond about the project.

Think of it like the message center on your online banking site - the messages all stay there, secure. Or Facebook, where you can send a message and little bit of it gets sent to your main email address.

What are the use cases? Here are some we've considered...

a. Projects where keeping all the communications together is important for archival purposes (more temporal projects).
b. Projects where the audit trail of communications is important.

c. Projects/teams where sensitive information is shared, but the Quickr discussion or library are just not the right metaphor, and messaging fits better.

d. Organizations who have a project-oriented workforce and are facing issues with mail quotas because of attachments.

Key benefits of QMessage are that it leaves the attachments in the place and not in your inbox (reducing storage demands on your mail server), and it keeps communications about the project more "contextual" and not mixed in with your everyday email, Facebook and Twitter notices.

So go get the goods, and look for another great announcement tomorrow...

SNAPPS Quickr Templates updated and available for Quickr 8.2

QuickImage Category QuickrTemplates
I'm happy to say that a couple days ago, we posted both an update for 8.1.0.9 and 8.2 templates! Once again, we've managed (with some difficulty) to keep the same source code for all versions.

There is a trick for new installs of 8.2 that I have to get into the documentation, but I'll post it here for the moment. In qpconfig.xml, you must turn off xsrf in the security section. This is a new setting in 8.2 designed to prevent a rare kind of cross-site scripting attack. When on, Quickr validates a new form is created from a standard place (as in, "New Page or Folder" link). In the templates, however, there are several places where we create a link to open a new form, which triggers this "nonce token check". Bottom line, turn it off. Eventually we'll code the forms and links to comply with the new setting. In the meantime, you were only vulnerable to this kind of XSS if you happened to have Quickr on the extranet, and open for Anonymous access to post. Which you can't really do anyway, except in the blog template.

So, enough boring admin details, new features!

*QMeeting has a new meeting form that supports indentation in the agenda, zero-time agenda items and hiding/showing times. This feature set was sponsored by a customer, the Central Bank of the Bahamas. Thanks!

*QSurvey, QIdeas and QPresent have a new advanced delete function. When using "Delete" in one of the main forms, the delete call is intercepted and replaced with our version which will clean up remnants left behind by that action. In QSurvey, it will delete answers. In QIdeas and QPresent, it will clean up comments and versions. QSurvey also received a new feature, the ability to copy a survey to a new instance with the same questions. Of course, all these features made it into QSite.

*Six templates that have our advanced workflow engine received a new Workflow Setup form, with an enhanced and more intuitive UI for setting up the unlimited workflow steps.

The above features are in the Quickr 8.1.0.9 and 8.2 templates for download as well as the source code.

So - go get the goods and enjoy!

Lots of exciting news coming this week...new template, new free tool going to public beta, and more info coming on CU 2009!
